Turkey Treats

I made these at a friend's home for a fundraiser over 25 years ago. They sold fast and I even took orders that I made at home. My boys were 6, 4 and 2 years old at the time and they loved helping me make them to sell, to have for us and to give as gifts.

The next year as I prepared the boys for the significance of the coming of Thanksgiving (also my anniversary!) David, Stephen and Adam all began to talk about how excited they were that the Turkey Treats would be at each guest place setting as we had done the year before, and how they could hardly wait to shop for the ingredients and help make the little turkeys for teachers, friends and to mark each plate as we did the year before...AND – M-M-M! – TO EAT THEM!!

I really had NO intention of making them again! But, with their persistent enthusiasm, I made them again.

Every year after that, they would bring up the Turkeys before I would even decide if I was going to make them! Of course, because they talk about them, I have since made them yearly; they are now a family TRADITIONAL treat.

This year, my middle son is hosting us for Thanksgiving. We (our other two sons, my hubby and I) are traveling to visit and have Thanksgiving Thursday (our anniversary), Chanukah Friday a week early, and HIS ENGAGEMENT PARTY Saturday evening during our four day visit. The first words my son mentioned when we were sharing the menu weeks ago and reviewing the weekend event agenda for our visit was, "Great Mom, remember to make extra TURKEYS for the party!" He was talking about the engagement party!

He said, "The hostess will love to put them out for all the guests (family members and friends of the bride-to-be that we have yet to meet). Then he said, "...and of course, Mom, make lots for all our dinners together!!"

Ingredients

* 1/2 cup powdered cugar
* 4 tablespoons milk
* Yellow and red food coloring
* 12 chocolate-covered cherries
* 24 Ritz crackers
* 36 candy corns
* 1/4 cup chocolate chips

Preparation

Look at the photo as a guide. This recipe makes 12 turkeys.

Mix the powdered sugar with enough milk until you have a paste. Add a drop of yellow and then red food coloring to make mixture close to the cracker color.

Spread frosting mix on two crackers. Wait a minute until frosting begins to set.

Place two candy corn on one cracker with small pointy ends facing in and touching. These will be the "feet." Lay a chocolate cherry slightly behind corn feet on its side with the flat side facing the back. Place remaining frosted cracker against chocolate cherry and press to hold.

Meanwhile, melt chocolate chips in the microwave and dip one corn in chocolate to act as the "glue." Attach a corn to the top of chocolate-covered cherry and against the vertical cracker as the "head."

Let harden and enjoy!

you asked:

I have been getting asked so here are the plans that the agency had shared so far as to what we may do in Israel :
• Helping at an army base that supplies the IDF troops that were engaged in the Gaza war last year
• Volunteering in an Elite chocolate factory on a kibbutz
• Spending mornings with participants in the Handicapped Soldiers Art Club
• Volunteering with kids at risk from the Youth Futures program
• Volunteering in the Hodayot Youth Village
• Teaching English one-on-one to chefs and executives from Holiday Inn College in Tiberias.

I am looking forward to visiting with teachers i have met and using my experience both in art and teaching beyond the list that we have been give of what we can expect to do in Israel.

I am thrilled to share my upcoming commitment

I want to share with you where I will be volunteering in November. I will be staying at Hodayot (Hebrew: הוֹדָיוֹת‎), a religious boys school and youth village in the Lower Galilee, Israel, founded in May 1950.
The village is situated on the early site of kibbutz Lavi, which moved half a kilometer eastward. Hodayot means "thanksgiving" in Hebrew. Hodayot Youth Village is also near the Sea of Galilee. The youth village belongs to the national-religious stream and was established 1950. It has 211 students (boys and girls), most of them of Ethiopian origin, a few from the former Soviet Union and some native born.

The name came from the Thanksgiving Scroll or Hodayot was one of the first seven Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in 1947 by the Bedouin. The scroll gets its name from the recurring use of the phrase “I thank you” in many of the poems.

AI am with other volunteers for what is called Face To Face , and is part of a Partnership program between Israel.
Milwaukee • St. Paul • Tulsa • Soviet Kinneret: It is called the Living Bridges in the Jewish Future .

To make this trip one of a lifetime...I am then going on to Paris!
For someone who never gotten on a plane along, it will be a challenge to do 8 boarding and deboardings and boarding..you get the picture to get me to Newark,Israel,Paris, Israel, and then Newark and finally home..will be my greatest challenge.
Or is my challenge packing for this month long adventure!

Home being demolished next door!

I hope you can view this video from my flipcam..the house next to use burned down and now the whole thing will be replaced . from a one story ranch to a two story cap cod .

the yard now has all bordering trees and bushes cut down so the machines needed to do the demolishing can get in to do the work.

i miss the seclusion we had, but happy for our neighbors getting a new home. by the way, thank goodness no one was hurt in the fire as most were home.

will try to set some more pictures of the progress of this major project!! :-)
