This is a follow up to the blog before this one:
on Thu, 2/19/09.
James Rucker, ColorOfChange.org wrote and I want to share it:

He says what I believe and want you to read very carefully!

Yesterday, the day after President Obama signed the stimulus bill, his first major piece of legislation, the New York Post ran a cartoon depicting the bill's author as a dead monkey, covered in blood after being shot by police.

In the face of intense criticism, The Post's editor is standing by the cartoon, claiming it has no racial undertones, that it's not about Obama, and that it was simply referencing an incident earlier this week when police shot a pet chimpanzee (an argument that pundits and analysts simply aren't buying).1
It's impossible to believe that any newspaper editor could be ignorant enough to not understand how this cartoon evokes a history of racist symbolism, or how frightening this image feels at a time when death threats against President Obama have been on the rise.
Please join us in demanding that The Post apologize publicly and fire the editor who allowed this cartoon to go to print:
http://colorofchange.org/nypost/?id=2039-803436
The Post would have us believe that the cartoon is not about Obama. But on the page just before the cartoon appears, there's a big picture of Obama signing the stimulus bill.2 A reader paging through The Post would see Obama putting pen to paper, then turn the page to see this violent cartoon. The imagery is chilling.
There is a clear history in our country of racist symbolism that depicts Black people as apes or monkeys, and it came up multiple times during the presidential campaign.3
We're also in a time of increased race-based violence. In the months following President Obama's election there has been a nationwide surge in hate crimes ranging from vandalism to assaults to arson on Black churches.4,5 There has been an unprecedented number of threats against President Obama since he was elected,6 with hate-based groups fantasizing about the killing of the president. Just a week ago, a man drove from Louisiana to the Capitol with a rifle, telling the police who stopped him that he had a "delivery" for the president.7
There is no excuse for The Post to have allowed this cartoon to be printed, and even less for Editor Col Allan's outright dismissal of Black concerns.
But let's be clear about who's behind The Post: Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch, the Post's owner, is the man behind FOX News Channel. FOX has continually attacked and denigrated Black people, politicians, and institutions at every opportunity, and we've run several campaigns to make clear how FOX poisons public debate.8
We don't expect much from Murdoch. However, with enough public pressure we can set the stage for advertisers and subscribers to think long and hard before patronizing outlets like the Post that refuse to be held accountable.
You can help by making it clear that the Post's behavior is unacceptable, and by asking your friends and family to do the same. It only takes a minute:

Boycott the NY POST for this Cartoon!

BOYCOTT NY POST AND THEIR ADVERTISERS

Greetings friends and family,
I am sure by now you have all heard about the New York Post's recent "cartoon" that appeared in Wednesday's edition, which was insulting and offensive to this nation's President and to all of the people of these United States of America. Please keep in mind that the New York Post did not support president Barack Obama and in fact endorsed John McCain, the republican candidate in the general election. Please also note that the New York Post, ("hereinafter referred to as The Post") has a long history of supporting slander and oppressive viewpoints against people of color.
I don't know about you but I don't want The Post's apology. I want them to close. I want them to take their racist, hateful opinions and stick it where the sun don't shine.
I implore each and every one of you to use your power and influence and reach out to everyone that you know and boycott The Post. You see, The Post needs us but we don't need The Post. We can exercise our freedom of choice and elect not to purchase The Post and not to do business with any of The Post's advertisers. This will relay a strong message that their behavior is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

WRITE THE POST AND THEIR ADVERTISERS THAT YOU WILL NOT SUPPORT ANY OF THEM!!!!!!

New York museums retain disputed Picassos in settlement

Two prominent New York museums have reached a settlement with the heirs of a German-Jewish banker over a pair of Picasso paintings.

On Monday, as the trial over the disputed artwork was slated to begin, lawyers for Julius Schoeps, and for the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Solomon Guggenheim Foundation instead revealed to Manhattan Federal Court Judge Jed Rakoff that both sides had reached a settlement.

Other than saying that the two museums would retain the Cubist master's Boy Leading a Horse (held by MoMA) and Le Moulin de la Galette (held at the Guggenheim), they shared few details.

However, Rakoff urged both sides to reveal the terms of the settlement, setting a 30-day deadline for an explanation of why the deal should remain confidential.

The two paintings were formerly owned by German banker Paul von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Schoeps's great-uncle. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy died in 1935, after Adolf Hitler rose to power.

At issue was whether, before his death, the banker and art collector sold the two paintings in question to Jewish art dealer Justin Thannhauser (to protect his collection from the Nazis) or whether he simply consigned them to the Berlin dealer.

Thannhauser later fled Germany. He sold Boy Leading a Horse to then-MoMA chair William Paley in 1936 and gifted Le Moulin de la Galette to the Guggenheim museum in 1963.

In 2007, Schoeps and other heirs of Mendelssohn-Bartholdy demanded the paintings be turned over, while the two museums launched legal action to confirm their ownership of the paintings.

Schoeps lost a previous lawsuit involving another of his great-uncle's Picasso paintings.

In 2006, he failed in his attempt to block an auction of Portrait de Angel Fernandez de Soto, which had also been sold by Thannhauser in the 1930s.

did you know this about WI. history!!

In the spring of 1852, Joshua Glover escaped from slavery and made his way north from Missouri to Wisconsin, where he found work in Racine. On March 11, 1854, his owner, Bennami Garland, tracked him down and arrested Glover under the Fugitive Slave Law. The next night, abolitionists led by Sherman Booth famously broke into the jail and helped Glover escape to Canada. Glover's escape helped to stir-up the abolitionist movement in Wisconsin and led Wisconsin to become the only state in country to declare the Fugitive Slave Law unconstitutional.
